I’ve been hitting the oil and gas market head on for a few months now, and I’m starting to see a reoccurring theme that reminded me of my old database days. Vendor lock in which causes data silos is a real thing and can cause real operational challenges even when managing Cathodic Data.

Back in the day, I was involved in a lot of interesting discussions and use cases around creating a data fabric or unified architecture to make data available across the enterprise. What are the advantages of creating a data fabric? In this case and for the sake of being brief, I’ll focus on two.

Unified architectures and free flowing data allow the users within the organization to find data faster and easier which means companies can spend more time gathering insights from data to make better business decisions. Secondly, when you have unified architectures, this allows for automation and everyone in your operations to be up to speed on day-to-day tasks. Think about having your field teams being in sync with scheduling and operations and even allowing your finance teams to tap into work orders to ensure payments match completed work. It’s a well-oiled machine and it all starts with data accessibility.
Data silos remind me of high school where you have all the cliques sitting together at separate tables in the lunchroom. You’ve got the jocks, cheerleaders, mathletes, and musicians all isolated from each other in their own little bubbles. We’ve all been there. But just imagine how much more we would learn if each clique sat at the same table and communicated with each other. Now you have insights, new ideas and perspectives, and even discussions you never thought you’d ever have.

The idea for this write up really came from customer demand. We keep having discussions with Cathodic Protection professionals who want their data to integrate into other solutions like Maximo or SAP, and the good news is, GEOMAGIC Utility Solutions has a product that can do that. At GEOMAGIC, we aren’t concerned with locking you into our product but more concerned about your overall success in data management and operations. Yes, we can be your overall solution to manage your cathodic protection data or we can be an integral piece to your overall operations. We let our customers decide.
